A lot of things have happened in the summer - so here are some news to share! Congratulations to all the great achievements!

  • Sarena Banu won a grant by NEOF (NERC Environmental Omics Facility) to support her PhD project on the effect of heat stress on multicellular development with RNA sequencing data, which also includes training.
  • Ed Gilbert won two grants from the UK Genetics Society: One conference grant to attend the 10th World Congress of Herpetology in Borneo where he presented his work on Gallotia galloti, as well as a fieldwork grant to go back to Tenerife for a transplantation experiment to expose those lizards to different climate regimes.
  • Megan Power, Kaylee Beine, Liam Connell, Sarena Banu, Jiao Li, Sofia Vamos and Kat went to the annual meeting of the Society of Experimental Biology in Prague to each present posters or talks about the work in the lab.
  • Ed Gilbert took the lead to finalize and publish a paper by former undergrad research student Sarah da Silva on geckos in the UK
  • Kaylee, Lauric and Kat put out a preprint on the role of networks in transcriptomic stress responses in zebrafish embryos, and submitted it for publication
  • Our summer students all successfully completed their projects! This included undergrads Annika and Lydia from the ARCADIA programme, and Kelly and Angel from the Crawford-Hayes programme, as well as Yujing Zhou who did her internship for her MSc in Applied Environmental Science with us.
  • Adam had his corrected thesis accepted and is now officially Dr. Bates!
  • A paper that Megan and Kat collaborated on has just been accepted in Molecular Biology Resources. In the meantime, here is the preprint
  • The new IUCN Amphibian Conservation Action plan to which Kat contributed has just come out
  • Sofie passed her Stage Transfer Assessment and progressed to Phase 2 of her PhD!
  • Liam is “officially” leaving us as he has levelled up to full time Technical Officer in SBES, and will from now on be based on the 3rd floor. However, inofficially, he will still be a lab member, contributing to several studies.
  • This means: We''re hiring! I am looking for a project co-ordinator to replace Liam, who will be employed on a 50% basis and help with lab organisation and ordering, travel organisation, and liaising with our animal care staff in Conway and in the O’Brien Centre. This may be interesting for a recent graduate who’s already based at UCD, and wants to work in the academic environment while finishing up a paper maybe, or writing a grant. The candidate must be legally allowed to live and work in the Republic of Ireland as visa sponsorship is not possible on part time contracts. The initial contract will be for 6 months.
